Aubrey sighs as Marcus puts the Dior shoe on him. The white high-tops are one of Marcus’s Christmas gifts for Aubrey.

“Our first Christmas together,” Marcus says. “You excited, bae?”

“Uh-huh,” Aubrey says and forces a smile as he looks at Marcus.

Marcus grins. “Me too!”

Aubrey wants to say it’s all wrong. He hates the Dior shoes. They’re white. He hates white. He hates… Marcus? No. He doesn’t hate Marcus. He doesn’t love Marcus either. That’s the problem. Marcus is just… hovering, suspended in Purgatory, a relationship limbo.

Sure, the sex is great, even better than with Matt.

Aubrey sighs. Oh, Matt. He’s most likely with that pink-haired abomination. Aubrey grits his teeth.

“You okay, bae?”

Aubrey looks at Marcus again and his eyes widen. It’s not Marcus… It’s Matt?

Aubrey’s heart skips a beat. This can’t be real. He’s gone insane. He’s imagining things, and right now he’s imagining Matt on his knees, kneeling and putting on a white Dior shoe, like Prince Charming and Cinderella.

Is he hallucinating? Marcus insisted on opening the presents first thing in the morning and Aubrey hasn’t had coffee yet.

Oh, Matt.

“Bae?”

“I love the shoes,” Aubrey says. He swallows and blinks slowly, trying to shake off the mirage.

But Matt’s still there. In front of him. Caressing his bare leg.

Aubrey’s had crushes before. They were always hard and fast. And true to their nature, they always left him crushed and burnt. Matt’s different. When they were together, whatever together meant, and however short that was, Aubrey always felt happy and giddy and so much in love. And he wants that feeling back.

Aubrey blinks again and Matt vaporizes. “No.”

“What’s that?” Marcus says as he manages to put the Dior shoe on Aubrey’s foot.

“Uh… I mean, thank you,” Aubrey says.

“I know white’s not really your color, but when I saw them I knew I had to get them for you.”

“Thank you,” Aubrey says again. “I love them. I really do.”

“Well, I love you,” Marcus says and takes Aubrey’s hand in his.

Aubrey smiles. Marcus makes him happy too. Maybe not as intensely as Matt did. And his parents seem to like Marcus. How could they not? Marcus’s a software engineer who’s created and sold tens of startups. He’s soft-spoken and showers Aubrey with gifts. And he’s an even better cook than Matt. Aubrey should do something nice for Marcus. Especially after that disastrous Halloween party.

Aubrey swallows hard. “Me too.”

Marcus kisses Aubrey’s inner thigh and gets up.

“Well, I’m gonna cook us breakfast. Eggs benedict?”

“That… that sounds yummy. Thank you. I’ll be there in a bit.”

Aubrey sits there in silence. The shoes look great. They’re Dior after all. Maybe his new year’s resolution should be to wear more white to balance out all the black?

He should be happy. So, why is he crying?

BTS Thoughts:

As much as I enjoy making clothes for the “regular” citizens of Dollsexposed, I still want them to look like they’re middle/working class. This is why they hardly have fancy stuff, except maybe for Manuel and his Moschino bags and accessories.

Aubrey, Derek, and now Marcus are a different breed and this means I have to step up my game when it comes to creating clothes for them. Aubrey’s more fashionable than Derek and Marcus, so I need to spend some time sewing and crafting. I want his style to be elevated.
