Story recap refreshers:
“Honey, I’m home,” Matt says with a lilt. “Man, feels like a long time since I last said that, and it’s still not too dark out.” He rushes over to Chrissy to give him a kiss, but Chrissy pushes him away.
“Um, what’s wrong?”

“Have you and Aubrey been communicating this past year?” Chrissy says.
“I… What? What are you talking about?” But Matt knows what Chrissy’s talking about.
Chrissy taps his phone and reads the screen. “‘He’s good with words and puns. He’s a big fan of Bob’s Burgers, so that tracks. Bob’s Burgers and the color red.’ And, ‘…the amount of hours we spent talking, texting.’ That’s from his interview. What the fuck, Matt?”
“Babydoll,” Matt squeezes Chrissy.
“No, don’t ‘Babydoll’ me. Just… Did he mean you?”
When Matt first saw the new Aubrey interview, he was worried Chrissy would read it and suspect it was him Aubrey meant.
“What? Like I’m the only person he knows who loves Bob’s Burgers?” Matt scoffs.
“And the color red?” Chrissy says, his voice raised. “Gimme a break!”

“Yes, Bob’s Burgers and red,” Matt says.
“Oh, no, don’t you dare roll your eyes. Fuck. I gotta go. My ride’s here and I’m already late.”
“Huh? But I came home early just for you!”
“Billy wants to do a live product review tonight,” Chrissy grabs his stuff and heads to the door. “And you could’ve texted.”
“It was meant to be a surprise, a pleasant one,” Matt says. “And it’s just Billy. Can you cancel? I thought we could go out? Let me take you to dinner. To that place you like in Highland Park. You’re already dressed up and looking super cute.”

“Even if I could cancel, why should I? You’re so wrapped up in your job that we hardly see each other. What’s one more night, right? Also, ‘It’s just Billy?’ Really, Matt? We can’t all have our own construction company and a six-figure income.”
“No, I didn’t mean…”
“The cats have been fed. Don’t wait up.”
Matt braces for a door slam, but he feels a little relieved when that doesn’t happen. He can’t remember the last time Chrissy was this angry at him. Has Chrissy ever been this angry at him?
He sighs and slumps down on the sofa. Thoughts are racing in his head a million miles a second. How was he able to maintain his composure? He hates conflicts and he’s a bad liar. Is it because he’s tired that he comes across as stone-faced? Did Chrissy catch his tell? Or has he become good at lying?
His phone buzzes. He hopes it’s Chrissy, telling him he’s coming back and they can have dinner together, but…

“Chrissy and I are fighting thanks to your article,” Matt says.
“Aw, I’m sorry,” Aubrey says at the other end of the phone. “I really held myself back from giving more clues. Besides, it’s Bob’s Burgers and red. I mean, it could be anyone!”
“That’s what I said too,” but Matt knows he’s saying it to reaffirm his own belief and make himself feel better about concealing that he and Aubrey have been talking. Although the communication has only been mostly platonic and professional.
“By the way, thank you for your Nebuluxe order. I’ve cancelled it and you’ll be getting a refund.”
“Wait, what?”
“Sweetie, you helped me build Nebuluxe almost from scratch. The least I could do is send you the gummies for free.”
A big smile lights up Matt’s face. “Oh, thanks. I mean, you didn’t have to cancel it. You could just refund me and then send the gummies.”
“I thought I’d hand-deliver them.”
Matt hears a knock on the door. “Aubrey, is that you at my door?”
“Yes,” Aubrey says. “Now open up.”
Matt leaps off the sofa to get the door. He opens it and sees Aubrey standing with a huge bouquet of roses.

“You… really shouldn’t have,” Matt says. “I’m already in trouble with Chrissy and if he finds out you’re here…”
“Oh, relax. My driver’s out at the front door. He’ll call me if he comes back. Plus, just shut him up with these,” Aubrey hands Matt the bouquet. “Nobody can resist two dozen roses.”
“That’s… very thoughtful. Thank you.”
“I got them for you, but whatever you do with them is your prerogative. Anyway, I saw your answers on the website questionnaire, you said you were having issues with focus and libido?”
“Are you supposed to… I mean, don’t you have staff that takes care of shipping and stuff?”

“Trust me, whatever answer you put on the website is between you and the questionnaire AI. My shipping people only process whatever order that comes through and ship it. I happened to be snooping around. I saw you only bought La Vida Lemon, so I also got you the Passion Fruit. On the house. Forever.”
“I was gonna get it, but I thought I’d try the Lemon first to see if it, you know, does what it says.”
“Oh, it does,” Aubrey says. “I stand by my products. Just make sure you don’t eat more than two at once and no more than six a day, okay? They taste just like regular gummies, but they’re not. I know you have issues with snacking.”
Matt chuckles. “You know me well.”
“Well enough to not kiss you right now,” Aubrey leans forward. He extends his hand to caress Matt’s cheek.
Matt’s smile fades. “Aubrey…”

“I know. I’m engaged. I’m happily engaged. Marcus is the perfect guy. But sometimes I need my hard-hat, blue-collar fix, you know?”
“You could always make him wear a construction worker costume.”
Aubrey laughs. “That’s… not a bad idea. Anyway, I have to go pick him up at the airport. I’ll text you a code that guarantees you won’t be charged if you order anything from the website. Or you could just text me if you need a refill.”
“Thank you. This means a lot to me. I really appreciate it. Say hi to Marcus from me.”
“Will do,” Aubrey says. “It’s good to see you. And don’t forget: no more than two gummies each time and no more than six every day.”
“I won’t forget.”
Matt smiles as he closes the door, but then he remembers his tiff with Chrissy. He knows he needs to come clean, but not after that fight on Halloween a few years ago. He even promised Chrissy he wouldn’t be involved with Aubrey.
He just hopes Chrissy will cool off a bit when he comes home. Now he needs to hide the gummies somewhere.
