“OK, uh, before we begin,” Takeshi says, “I have something to say.”
The boys are at Matt’s and Chrissy’s place. It’s the LA Pride weekend and they’re prepping the things they need for the march.
“I told you it was Matt who last used the toilet,” Wade says.
“Nuh-uh!” Matt playfully pushes Wade away.
“You idjeet, that’s not what I was trying to say,” Takeshi rolls his eyes. “And we all know it was you who
wrecked the dookie throne. I mean somebody should really Febreze it. Even the litter boxes aren’t that
stinky.”
“Yes, yes, we get it,” Wade says as everyone laughs. “Not my fault I eat a lot of fiber.”
“Anyway, can I please get the attention back?” Takeshi says.
“Takeshi and I are together,” Manuel holds Takeshi’s hand.
“They already know, bish,” Chrissy says.
“What? How?” Takeshi and Manuel squeal in unison.
“Did you tell them?” Manuel asks Chrissy.
“You told Chrissy?” Takeshi asks Manuel.
“He’s my best friend!” Manuel says.
“You weren’t really discreet about it,” Matt says. “We all saw you two canoodling at last year’s Halloween
party.”
“But congrats for finally coming out of the closet,” Chrissy says.
“Yeah! Mazel tov!” Wade claps his hands. “Guess that means I’m the only single guy in the group.”
“Aw, Wade, we’ll find someone for you,” Manuel says.
“Someone with no sense of smell,” Takeshi says.
“Har har, very funny,” Wade lolls his tongue at Takeshi and Manuel. “Now can we please start working on our Pride stuff oh my God why are you guys kissing…”
Wade’s pleas fall on deaf ears as Takeshi gives Manuel a kiss and Matt plants one on Chrissy.
“Hello? Guys?” Wade says.
“Seriously, people?”
“OK, babe, I need to get dinner ready,” Matt lets go of Chrissy.
“Finally!” Wade says. “Come on. Chop chop. Let’s go, people.”
The rest of the group groans and jokes that Wade runs the show like a drill sergeant.
Soon, everyone falls into their rhythm. Matt makes dinner, Takeshi works on the posters, Chrissy designs
and cuts the graphics for the Pride t-shirts, and Manuel makes vegan rainbow boas (Wade helps a little but he mostly just plays with Galadriel, Matt and Chrissy’s black and white cat).
“Hey, Manu, I hope this isn’t offensive,” Wade says, “but you’re nonbinary, so do you want us to refer you as? You know, in relations to Takeshi? ‘Takeshi’s partner?'”
“That works,” Manu says. “Our spouse. ‘Significant other’ is a mouthful. But anything that’s gender-neutral.”
“Gotcha, thank you.”
“Yes, of course. Glad you asked.”
