Now that season two is finally over, there are a few things I’d like to address, including what I’ve learned along the way. Maybe some of what I did would help you in your own doll storytelling.

Plan Everything

And I mean everything. I have a spreadsheet of the episodes, with details on which dolls will be in the scene, the backdrop, and accessories and clothes I need to make. This helped me in grouping photoshoot for several episodes. For example, “Matt’s Locker Room Encounter” (episode 9) and “Locker Room Confessions” (episode 13) were shot back-to-back, so I didn’t have to assemble and disassemble and reassemble the locker room set. This particular set is pretty simple, unlike Lick It or Matt and Chrissy’s living room.

But this could only work if the episodes were already written, which brings us to the second point.

Write Everything

And I mean everything. Write it all in your first, second, third, fourth, nth drafts. Then edit like hell. Sleep on it, wake up, edit some more. Sleep on it again, wake up, edit some more. I know for some people, this may seem like a lot of work to produce something so trivial, so inconsequential, and so smutty.

Like so many doll writers, Dollsexposed was conceived as a creative outlet. My own life can’t handle that much drama (I’m still in therapy for things that happened when I was a child), so I make my dolls have them. I live vicariously through them. They enjoy the kind of life I don’t have, whether it’s sex, relationships, or luxury items. But of course, there’s a caveat (more on that below).

Sometimes I believe that if I could draw well enough, or be delusional enough to think I had skills in drawing, I’d probably not use dolls. I’m not trying to invalidate or disvalue the work illustrators do, but sewing doll clothes, building dioramas, making accessories, and hunting for bargains for things I can’t make takes a lot more time than drawing. Not to mention posing the dolls, taking photos, and editing them. Still, I can’t draw for shit, and I’m a decent enough photographer with even better photo editing skills, so here we are.

Speaking of photography…

Experiment

I’m a stickler for eye-level framing when it comes to photography, which results in the photos generally having straight horizontal lines.

There are some bird’s eye view and frog’s eye view shots, especially in episodes with sex scenes like in the “Product Review Gone Wrong (in All the Right Ways)” and “Forgiven, Forgotten, Fucked“, because I had to make sure the things that had to be seen were captured.

However, for the season finale (episode fifteen), every time Chrissy is hit by some kind of crisis, the scene was shot with a Dutch angle to really emphasize his distress.

Now, about Chrissy’s distress…

Put Your Characters through Hell

In the Dollsexposed solar system, Chrissy is the sun. I don’t believe in horoscopes, but Chrissy is a Leo, whose “planet” is the sun, so that’s a nice coincidence for this metaphor. Season 1 (or anything before season 2, really) saw Chrissy living in a premarital bliss with Matt (and Wade), with great friends. He doesn’t own luxury goods, but he gets by. There were some issues when Aubrey tried to get between him and Matt, which resulted in the Halloween Bash Showdown, but it was pretty much resolved.

This season, it’s different. I wanted Chrissy to face conflicts big enough to affect everyone in his orbit: Matt, Wade, Manuel, and Takeshi.

I’m putting all of them through the wringer not because I enjoy torturing them (I do, especially because their “lives” are practically better and more colorful than mine), but because it gives these characters an arc and a chance to grow. This is why planning, plotting, and mapping out the episodes were crucial, not just for the season, but for the whole series.

This season, Wade dealt with antisemitism; Matt dealt with workaholism, erectile dysfunction, infidelity, and sexual assault; and Manuel and Takeshi dealt with infidelity. But Chrissy did get the lion’s share (again, Leo pun) of problems.

What It Means to Have Seasons

For a while, I debated what to name this format. Calling it “season” and “episode” feels like straying away from the written form since these terms are mostly used for television. I wanted to use “issue” like in comic books, but it doesn’t fit either, no matter how much I love comics.

I also thought “seasons” and “episodes” sounded like these dolls are playing characters and not their authentic self. I know it’s confusing, I mean, dolls don’t have an authentic self, it’s whatever we assign them, even if we think they’ll grow and nurture their own personality and habits, and thus own their world in the end.

But then I thought “seasons” and “episodes” and “series” sound practical enough, and I already put too much effort and too many thoughts into this that I’d gladly take a simple solution.

Since its inception, Dollsexposed was meant to showcase fashion, activism, and porn, intertwined with stories. However, things took a turn when I began filling in backstories. I also wanted to have more meaningful sex scenes. No matter how taboo the sex is, it has to fulfill a purpose, which is to enrich a character’s storyline.

It became an issue when the plot began to overtake the fashion and activism aspects. Fashion and tribute shots are great for one-off posts (although I did shoot fashion-based episodes for “Aubrey Effect” and “Supermodel It’s Supermodel Documentary Hour!“, but stories need to be structured, with plots, arcs, conflicts, growths, and epiphanies that can’t just be resolved in a single episode. It’s not classic Star Trek episodes.

I’ve seen doll creators stop posting, whether it’s because they lost interest or because life happened. Both these two reasons are valid. My hiatus from mid-2024 to early 2025 was a wake-up call: I may not want or be able to do doll stuff forever, but I’d like to at least give a complete picture of a certain period of life for my dolls. I owe it at least to myself to start and finish a project.

So, What’s Next?

Making season two was a huge undertaking that took a huge chunk of my life. It took me eleven hours just to shoot the first part of the season finale, and nine hours to shoot the second part.

Now that season two is over, I have some downtime to get my life back in order: exercise, socialize, and prepare for season three. The 202-2025 hiatus also made me realize how much I loved and enjoyed taking doll photos and writing doll stories. Resting and stepping away from the dolls between seasons reinvigorates my interest, so I can feel excited when I’m finally back to writing and producing doll stories.

I’m already plotting and planning the third and fourth seasons, with the fourth season being the series finale. So, for now, I hope you’ll enjoy reading the second season as much as I loved writing and producing it.

What I Liked

Putting Takeshi’s Lick It and Matt and Chrissy’s apartment in the first episode “(Late) Mishloach Manot Delivery” and then bookending the season finale also in Lick It and Matt and Chrissy’s apartment was not planned, but rather it was something that I realized sometime in mid-April after I decided to go all in on doing the seasons instead of just a loose, serialized group of stories. These two episodes also show Wade’s arc this season: he starts off wearing his Magen David proudly in the first episode, then hides it at the beginning of the season finale, and then wears it proudly again by the end of the fifteenth episode.

Another unplanned, lucky coincidence is the way these two photos appear side by side on Dollsexposed’s Instagram, almost mirroring each other. These are from “Aubrey’s Potion” (episode 5).

When Chrissy leaves, Aubrey appears (Instagram shows more recent post first). They’re both carrying stuff (Aubrey’s red roses vs Chrissy’s laptop, agenda, and phone). They’re both wearing a star necklace (Chrissy’s necklace is behind the laptop), spike bracelet (Aubrey’s right hand vs Chrissy’s left hand), and a sleeveless top.

I am extremely proud of this shot from “The Day Chrissy Loses Everything, Part 1: Wade“. The dolls were able to stand on their own (for the most part), and I hope I was able to capture the drama and motion of the conflict. It took me an hour to stage this scene. I had to make sure the photo would show all the dolls with their phones out, recording the confrontation and Chrissy having a meltdown, since this would be crucial for season three.

And finally, in “The Day Chrissy Losses Everything, Part 2: Manuel & Takeshi” (season finale/episode 15), I wanted to make it a point to have Manu and Chrissy together, in a close-ish range, but still separated, whether by the pole or different backgrounds, to convey that they’re on different terms. I wish I were consistent in the application, but some shots didn’t allow me to do this.

What I Didn’t Like

Let this be on the record that I wanted Chrissy’s birthday to match mine (late July), but life happened and there was a long shoot delay between “Ice Cream While He Schemes” (episode 8, original publish date was June 9, 2025) and “Matt’s Locker Room Encounter” (episode 9, original publish date was July 14, 2025). This snowballed into “Happy Birthday, Chrissy” (episode 14) being published on August 12, 2025.

Once all the episodes of season two have been published on Dollsexposed’s Instagram, I’ll backdate the posts on the website.

The season really kicked off with the mini hamantaschen tutorial post, which also includes Wade and Thor’s Purim costume in honor of the Bibas family. The Priapus’s Vibrating Egg post (for Easter) also falls in the holiday-related-but-not-quite-an-episode-and-more-of-a-behind-the-scenes-maybe category. I wish I had done more “unrelated” posts like this that aren’t necessarily a full-fledged episode but offer a backstory and thus a fuller picture.

I don’t think I’ll be able to do this in season three, but season four will most likely have “offshoot” posts due to their graphic sexual nature. I just need to work on the flow.

I hope you enjoyed season two as much as I enjoyed producing it.

Making Season 2: Production Notes

A look back to season two and what I learned (so far) about writing and producing fiction using sixth-scale doll photography.
