The bedroom is off-limits to outdoor shoes, but he can’t risk the pause today. If he stops to lace up in the living room after taking his bag, Matt might follow and start pestering him again. So Chrissy breaks the rule, their rule, and walks back into the bedroom with his shoes on. Why does he care? He won't be sleeping in the room anymore anyway. Besides, Aubrey has tainted the space when he came in the bedroom, and even laid on the bed, with his boots on. As he grabs his duffel bag, Chrissy locks eyes with Matt, who's sobbing and choking on his breath, unable to say or do anything, except to plead with his eyes. Chrissy wants to hug him, to tell him he'd be okay. They'd be okay. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but someday. Somehow. But now? Now he needs to get the hell out. He turns around but almost trips on the kneeling Matt. Matt staggers backward. "Dammit! Could you please just get up?" Matt sits on the bed without saying anything. Chrissy's heart breaks even more when he sees the face of the man he loves is also drenched in tears. He knows Matt hardly cries. "Don't think of following me, don't think of texting me or calling me. I'll grab the rest of my stuff in the daytime, and I don't want to see you here. Stay at your job or at Aubrey's or whatever the hell you do during the day. Just... don't be here." "Christopher, please..." Torrents of tears fall out as Chrissy closes his eyes. It's been years since Matt called him that, and less than an hour ago, Wade called him by his full first name too. That brief, lucid moment punches Chrissy in the gut. He realizes he was just in Matt's place, only with Wade and Manuel. His heart melts. Maybe he's mistaken about Matt and Aubrey, the way Manuel is mistaken about Takeshi and him? But again, what about Matt's promise to never contact Aubrey again after the fight they had on Halloween? What about the interview? What about the red roses? What about the goddamn gummies? "Can you not be here when I pick up the rest of my things?" Matt nods his head, defeated. The bedroom door is wide open, but the cats are too scared to come in because of all the shouting. Chrissy runs out into the living room. He hurriedly gathers his laptop and gadgets and stuffs them in his tote. As the cats bound over to gather around his feet, Chrissy kneels and kisses each of them goodbye. Matt promised Chrissy he wouldn't be too attached to his phone anymore, so maybe that's why? The bedroom door is closed, and Chrissy doesn't hear running water in the bathroom. George Meowchel emerges from behind the sofa, stretching as Chrissy picks him up. His purrs help calm Chrissy's nerves. "Where's Daddy, Georgy?" Chrissy takes off his shoes and tiptoes to the bedroom. He wants to surprise Matt and give him tons of kisses for the roses. An uneasiness blooms in the pit of Chrissy's gut when he notices a red bag on top of his laptop. Today has been an absolute clusterf*ck and he barely has the energy to drag his feet to the other side of the apartment. As he approaches the bedroom door, he can hear muffled voices. The knot in his stomach tightens. He closes his eyes, inhales, and turns the doorknob. "What. The f*ck." Chrissy drops George Meowchel, who quickly scampers away into the living room. Matt turns his body around to see Chrissy standing in their bedroom. "Hey, loser," Aubrey says, grinning from ear to ear. Chrissy blinks. He can't believe how right Aubrey is, but he ignores him and looks at Matt instead. "Is this why you said you couldn't go to the ice cream social?
