Fred sits next to Chrissy. "How did you forget? You literally made Billy's and the other guy's costumes. And yours too."

"I... I don't really wanna go." Chrissy closes his laptop.

"May I ask why?"

He doesn't want to look into Fred's eyes. He can't tell Fred about his finances or his failed attempt on growing his OnlyDolls. But there's also another reason.

"Is it politics?" Fred rubs Chrissy's back.

Chrissy nods.

"Aw, come here, baby," Fred says and holds Chrissy tightly, cradling him.

He remembers how good it feels to be held. He misses Matt and Wade and even Manuel. Their hugs always comforted him. Fred's is different, but he can't pinpoint why or how.

"When was the last time you went out?" Fred squeezes Chrissy hand.

"I... I guess last week for groceries."

Fred chuckles. "I mean for fun."

He thinks for a few seconds, but shakes his head. He no longer goes out just for the sake of it. Going out costs money, a luxury he can't really afford at the moment.

Fred holds Chrissy even tighter and kisses his forehead. "I'm not gonna force you to go out tonight if you don't want to, but it could be fun to see the costumes other people wear. Get you feel inspired? Plus, you'd be totally anonymous with a mask."

Chrissy presses his head closer to Fred and nuzzles against him. The scent of Fred's aftershave soothes him. Neither Matt nor Wade uses aftershave.

It's not a good day for Chrissy. In fact, it hasn't been a good day for a few weeks now. His only patron on OnlyDolls has disappeared. He's taken a few gigs from Anaïs but they're hardly sufficient.

So when that rare message comes in on OnlyDolls, he quickly opens it, giddy with anticipation.

"Hey, girly," the message reads. "Love your content." It comes with a $15 tip.

Chrissy's heart races. He quickly looks at the profile of the sender. It's barely filled. It could be a new account. Or it could be one of those weirdos who have harassing him over the viral video.

But they also gave him $15.

"How's $1K for a private show?"

There's a photo of a paper with a phone number. It also says "text me."

Chrissy winces. His OnlyDolls isn't that popular but he doesn't want to be deplatformed for breaking rules. But at the same time, he's read forums about creators' making serious money offsite.

As he's mulling over how to respond, he sees something move in the corner of his eyes. He almost throws his laptop to the side in panic.

"Goddammit, Fred!" Chrissy flings his headphones off and stands up on his mattress. "What the hell? You can't just barge in here."

"Excuse you?" Fred says. "I told you I'd come over before we go to the party. I knocked on your door for like eight minutes and texted you a few times! Check your phone!"

The annoyance in Fred's voice forces Chrissy to step back. He's been too wrapped up in his own issues and the death threats he still receives daily make him even more paranoid.

"The party's... today?" Chrissy slinks back down onto his mattress.

"Yeah, duh? In a few hours."

Chrissy looks up at Fred. He has a silver outfit in his hands, his costume for tonight. He's going as the Tin Woodman. They're supposed to meet Billy, going as the Scarecrow, at the party. The person he's courting to be the face of Priapus, Billy's sex shop, is going as Guy-Dorothy.

Chrissy is, of course, the Cowardly Lion.

WARNING: this fictional work involves topics of depression, sex work, and death. Discretion is advised.

Note to my story readers: Chrissy is okay (for now). "Ephemera" is non-canon. Think of it like The Simpsons' "Treehouse of Horror" episode.

"Ephemera" is a staged doll-photography series presented as a three-part narrative. The work explores intimacy, both transactional and emotional, within the transient spaces of sex work, juxtaposing human connection with the inevitability of mortality.

"Ephemera I: First Impression" (slide one)
In a motel room, a sex worker encounters a silent client whose presence feels both familiar and inevitable.

"Ephemera II: Afterglow" (slide two)
In the quiet aftermath of the encounter, realization begins to surface. He confronts memory and the fleeting nature of life within a space typically associated with transactional intimacy.

"Ephemera III: The Embrace" (slide three)
The final image shifts from realization to acceptance. Death is presented not as a violent force but as a quiet and intimate companion, framing mortality as a universal passage rather than a rupture.

When viewed in conjunction with the ongoing Chrissy's story on Dollsexposed, "Ephemera" deals not only with the nature of sex work but also the mental state of a character who seems to have lost everything.

I rarely put outtakes or B-rolls on my Insta, but I rarely put outtakes or B-rolls on my Insta, but I really like how this diorama turned out.

From the posters to the velvet rope to the "marble" floor to DaShawn's hair to the goddamn club walls that I painted outside when it was 100 degrees to the door to his shirt. It must've taken me hours.

Anyway, yes, I'm showing DaShawn (last name Ellis) because he's such a hottie and he's going to have a more prominent role in future season(s).

The Oscars Burnout Costume Party episode is coming. In the meantime, I hope you'll enjoy these photos.

I modeled this night club after the iconic Los Globos. Took me back to when I used to go there.

Ultimately, BILT never really suffered from the review bombs. They had years of solid reputation. The fake reviews were removed, and the glowing, truthful ones stayed. The board was happy, the employees relieved. They were shortlisted for the prestigious Best in Doll Living Award in the Sustainable Residential Construction category (at the time of publishing this article, BILT is now a finalist). And Matt, it seemed, was more than ready to put that incident behind.

"I'm... exploring something meaningful with someone,” Matt said when I asked how he was doing these days.

"They met at my gym, actually,” Gar said. There was no flourish to it, no grin—just a careful offering of fact. No more than a footnote.

"Gar’s still very much eligible,” Matt added, elbowing him.

"Single,” Gar's cheekiness returned, "but not ready to mingle.”

Malibu turned golden. Dusk was approaching. The photographer told me that it was time for their final look. The two men changed into their swim trunks, posing and flexing as the cold water lapped at their muscular calves.

Just before the winter sun dipped in the horizon, Gar dared Matt to take a full plunge. Matt pushed Gar into the water and followed after him. The crew laughed with them.

For a moment, they weren’t men in their mid-forties with hulking, imposing silhouettes. They were just school kids who had left the second-smallest city in the US and carved a name for themselves in the country’s second-biggest city.

(End of episode 6.)

I asked Gar if he was worried that the same campaign that had targeted BILT would also affect him, but he shook his head firmly.

"Look, I made it through deployments. I made it through DADT. I made it through the lockdown. If people want to tank my review page because I’m friends with Matt or because Matt loved someone they think is a villain? I’ll live."

But he didn't stop there.

"For whatever reason, I cannot think of a single line from Rocky or Rambo. But wisdom comes from all sorts of places, and this is from Legally Blonde. All that pink reminds me of Chrissy and he used to say this quote all the time to push himself during bootcamp: ‘Exercise gives you endorphins, endorphins make you happy—and happy people don’t spend their lunch breaks review-bombing a stranger’s business.’ Of course, I’m paraphrasing."

I glanced at Matt just in time to catch a faint smile flicker across his face.

To Matt, his dad’s grip on his emotions was—and still is—strong. That tension surfaced when Gar heaped praises on Matt's former fiancé of seven years, Christopher Fields, or Chrissy. For a brief moment, his eyes lit up.

I asked him about the video involving Chrissy that went viral last summer. It was a blip to the world, but a blight to those caught in it—damaging enough that BILT issued a statement.

"It wasn’t fun, but we did what we had to do." Matt swallowed and looked at me squarely—equal parts pleading for me to believe him and signaling he wanted to move on.

Over the course of the day, I noticed his tell: his Adam’s apple. He swallowed when he was nervous, and it always gave him away. Something bubbled beneath the surface, hot like molten lava—just contained enough not to erupt.

"Those two weeks were challenging, both personally and professionally. It was overwhelming. The bad reviews hit fast, and for a moment, it felt like the floor had dropped out from under us. But something unexpected happened at the same time—real clients, vendors, suppliers, they started posting their experiences. Without us asking. They just… showed up for us. It meant a lot. It reminded me why we built the company in the first place."

Years of working in construction helped Matt spot a market still largely untapped, even in California. BILT was one of the first construction companies that championed green technology.

"We start from practical and relatively small things like building accessible compost areas and efficient insulation to help regulate indoor temperature, to more sophisticated measures like planning gray-water irrigation systems and designing dedicated spaces for solar panels."

Matt’s explanation sounded like a pitch, though he credits most of the know-how to his younger business partner, Brandon Jackson, the CEO of BILT, while he’s perfectly happy running the company behind the scenes as COO.

As BILT was cementing its reputation, Gar opened Gar’s Gym in 2018, seven years after moving to Los Angeles. It quickly became a fixture in the Glendale area, a melting pot of yuppies, creatives, college students, full-time moms, and Gar’s leather buddies.

"Matt was hands-on in turning the space into a legit gym,” Gar said. "Around then, he mentioned he’d just started dating a graphic designer. Next thing I knew, the logo was done, the brand identity fell into place, the social media was running, the website was up and ready for online sign-ups. That was Chrissy. All of it. I said to Matt, 'Boy's a keeper.'"

Matt was already settled in Los Angeles when Gar retired from service. After high school, Matt took vocational training in construction and started out in masonry, eventually rising to structural concrete foreman at one of LA’s leading construction companies.

Gar returned to South Dakota, spending twelve months earning certifications in personal training and bodybuilding coaching before working his way up to head trainer at a chain gym in Sioux Falls—larger, busier, and a world away from Pierre.

Matt's father's passing in 2011 was a turning point not just for Matt but also for Gar.

"Dad and I never really reconnected even when I went home to spend the last two months of his life with him," Matt looked away. "He was still as bitter as the day Mom died when I was ten, and still resentful that I'd left him alone in Pierre to fester."

"Wasn't your fault." Gar squeezed Matt's broad shoulder.

"I know. Still."

"When I came to Matt's dad's funeral, we finally saw each other after maybe five years of sporadic texting," Gar said. "We shot the breeze like no time had passed between us."

Gar helped Matt sell the ranch, and he joined Matt in LA to start his career in the health industry. "I was more emotional about losing the ranch than Matt was."

"Dad left the property to me. He didn't have anyone else, so I guess he didn't have a choice. There was still a significant chunk of money after all the taxes and hospital bills, and I decided to launch BILT a year later."
